Summary report or “Layman’s report” of the REDUST project has been published in Finnish and English. Layman’s report is a report common for all LIFE+ projects and it summarizes the main project actions and results. The Layman’s report of REDUST includes information about street dust as an air quality problem, project goals, equipment used in the project, research methods and main conclusions and development of the local street dust situation during the project.

The summary report of the four-year REDUST project “Best practices in winter maintenance to reduce respirable street dust” has been published. The report presents the best practices in winter- and spring maintenance in the key segments of REDUST research. Also the effect of winter tyre properties on the street dust accumulation is touched, but the main focus is on street maintenance. Final report of REDUST Action 4: Winter maintenance strategy with feasible additional measures has been publihed. The report focuses on the signifigance of demonstrated maintenance actions, such as dust binding, street cleaning and traction sanding, as part of air quality improvement strategy. Results of REDUST project suggest that improved street maintenance strategy has good potential to reduce street dust emissions and further to reduce negative health impacts of street dust in the urban areas.

Final report of REDUST Action 3 (Total PM10 emissions, reduction potential and cost estimations of the measures to support the strategy development) has been published. The report includes estimations of street dust reduction efficiency of different maintenance techniques, estimates of cost of current and improved actions and also research information about the air quality / respirable dust (PM10) trends prevailing in the Helsinki region. Metropolia’s Sniffer research vehicle attracted interest in sunny Viikki

Final seminar of REDUST was held in Viikki on 30th September. The seminar summed up information about the current situation of street dust research and air quality with participation from Finland, Sweden, Norway and Estonia.

Results of REDUST demonstrations and VTI’s research program were presented and the message seemed to be that dust binding with both CaCl2 and CMA is proven to be effective for short term street dust reduction. Continue reading →

The upcoming REDUST seminar on 30th September will double down on street maintenance research with recents studies from Stockholm.The Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) has researched operational measures against PM₁₀ pollution in Stockholm during 2012-2013 and a report of these studies was published in the beginning of 2014. Final report of REDUST demonstration program, aka. Actions 1 and 2, has been publised. The report is available at the results-section of this website. It should be noted that this report does not include final conclusions of the whole REDUST project, which will be published in later deliverable products during the autumn 2014.

REDUST has proceeded to the finalization-phase of project actions. During the four years of REDUST research the knowledge of street dust prevention has increased and improved strategies for winter maintenance have been developed. Continue reading →
